POLICE APPEAL AFTER BURGLARIES

A burglary suspect ran from a home in Stapleford after being disturbed by the occupants. The incident, which happened on Cemetery Road, was reported to police just after 4am on Thursday 7th May 2020. The suspect was in a playroom gathering items he planned to steal when he was disturbed before he ran out of the back door. Nothing was stolen. Police are continuing with their enquiries into this incident and also a further report of a burglary which happened at a home on Valmont Road, Bramcote, between 10.30pm on Wednesday 6th May 2020 and 5am on Thursday 7th May.  One of the occupants woke up and went downstairs and noticed that his jacket pocket had been emptied. When he went into his living room he saw that two laptops had been taken along with a television before realising that two cars - a red Honda Jazz and a black Honda Civic - had also been stolen from the drive. Detective Sergeant Andrew Hall, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "I'd like to reassure local residents that we are working very hard to identify those responsible for these upsetting and invasive crimes and to bring them to justice. We're appealing for anyone who saw any suspicious activity in these areas around the stated times or if they saw either of the vehicles being taken from the Bramcote address to please get in touch with us by calling Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 70 of 7th May 2020, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

LOOSEN UP GARDEN WASTE!

Erewash residents are being urged to check their brown bins ahead of the restart of garden waste collections next week, with the borough council offering advice to help smooth the resumption following a six-week suspension.

Many householders will have had garden cuttings inside their bins for several weeks and the waste, by now, is likely to be compacted – meaning it may not empty out into the refuse vehicle. Residents are asked to use a garden fork to loosen the waste, particularly at the bottom of the bin, before putting it out for collection. If a bin is unable to be emptied, refuse crews will attach a yellow tag to the handle of the bin to explain the reason. Residents can help ensure this does not happen by taking the following precautions: 

          ·  Do not contaminate the brown bin. It is for garden waste only and must not contain              items  like food, recycling or black bin waste.

If the bin is too heavy it won’t be emptied. This will only apply if the lift on the refuse collection vehicle is unable to lift the bin. 
·  Only use a brown bin for garden waste. Any other bin with garden waste in will not be emptied.
·    Please note that additional side waste such as bagged garden waste cannot be collected.

Residents are also reminded to ensure their bin is out by 7am on their collection day. If a bin is not out and this is recorded by the crew, the council is not able to return to empty it until the next scheduled collection day. Councillor Garry Hickton, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Environment, says:

“We thank everyone for the support they have shown for our dedicated refuse crews who have carried out their frontline duties under very difficult circumstances. I know residents have welcomed the news that we are resuming garden waste collections next week, albeit for an initial four-week run as we review the impact on an already stretched service. Please follow the advice we’re giving to ensure that brown bin collections go as smoothly as possible. Thank you to all for your understanding.”

Brown bins will be emptied alongside recyclable waste in the Long Eaton and south area week beginning 11th May and then in Ilkeston and north of the borough week starting 18th May, with repeat collections from 25th May and 1st June. 

HUGE BLAZE AT SANDIACRE APARTMENT BUILDING

At 4.23pm on Tuesday 21st April firemen were called to a blaze at the Springfield Mill Apartments in Bridge Street, Sandiacre. Over a dozen appliances were at the scene including two aerial ladder platforms, two water carriers and a control room unit. Firefighters from Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Nottingham Road, Clay Cross, Belper, Highfields (Nottinghamshire), Stockhill (Nottinghamshire), London Road (Nottinghamshire) and Loughborough (Leicestershire) were also in attendance. They had arrived to find the blaze had ripped through the roof of the apartments. The block of flats were cleared and police closed the road. Flames could still be seen at 8pm although by then the blaze was under control.

Speaking from the scene, Area Manager Clive Stanbrook said: “Thanks to the rapid and effective firefighting carried out by crews, we have been able to save at least three quarters of the building by using fire breaks to prevent a catastrophic fire spread, which could have led to the loss of the whole building.”

Station Road, Bridge Street and Town Street remained closed during the evening as emergency services continued to deal with the fire.

On Wednesday morning 22nd April firefighters were continuing to deal with the fire. One crew from Ascot Drive Fire Station were using the aerial ladder platform to damp down hot spots that continued to burn in the roof space and between the third and fourth floor of the building. Work continued with emergency service colleagues, from Emergency Planning and Derbyshire police as part of the multi-agency response to this incident. A joint fire investigation is underway.

Maggie Throup, MP for Erewash, has released a statement regarding the fire at Springfield Mill, Sandiacre. She said: “I am aware of the developing situation at Springfield Mill in Sandiacre and have spoken to both the chief fire officer and the relevant Government Minister to ensure that help and support is being co-ordinated for those affected. I am being kept up to date with the situation on the ground and will be on hand to assist residents should they need my help over the coming days and weeks.”

SUPPORT AFTER DEVASTATING FIRE

Erewash Borough Council is working with emergency services and support agencies to provide on-going help to those involved in the devastating fire at Springfield Mill in Sandiacre on Tuesday. A number of residents have found themselves homeless after the blaze and the council helped evacuate them to temporary accommodation last night for shelter. Residents’ medical needs were looked after first and there were no coronavirus issues reported. This morning (Wednesday) the council’s Housing Options team held a briefing with residents to keep them informed of what is happening. The team is now assessing all the families involved to see where accommodation can be found for them going forward and will meet them again this afternoon to reassure them and keep them up-to-date. Councillor Carol Hart, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, says:

“Firstly, let me just say that our thoughts are with all those affected, this is a devastating time for them. Our priority – shared, of course by all the services involved – is to help make sure everyone is safe and looked after.

This is a large scale emergency support operation and our key aim right now is to find a solution for these families who have lost their homes. But there are other needs going forward in terms of the day-to-day essentials they now no longer have – these people have lost everything. Again, we will work with our partners and I know that there is already an initiative for donations launched by the local community. I would also like to add our thanks to the emergency services who responded so swiftly and especially to the firefighters who were able to contain what was a terrifying blaze and save a large part of this historic building.”

Throughout the battle to get the fire under control, the council’s Building Control team were also at the scene to help with structural advice. Springfield Mill is a historic former lace mill that was converted into apartments several years ago.

MAN CHARGED AFTER STAPLEFORD ASSAULT

Police were called after the report of an assault in Moorfield Court, Stapleford. Jake Rollinson, 19, of Hickings Lane, Stapleford, was charged with dangerous driving, driving without insurance, possession of cannabis, attempted grievous bodily harm, and common assault. He was remanded in custody to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on April 20th. The incident occurred at 12.20am on Saturday April 18th^. A 23-year-old man and a woman were also arrested on suspicion of assault. The man was released under investigation and the woman was released with no further action to be taken. A police spokesman said: “Anyone who saw what happened they should call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 13 of 18th April 2020.”

SANDIACRE STUDENT APPEARS IN COURT

Sandiacre student Elvis Duruaku, 24, appeared in court in Liverpool on Tuesday April 14th accused of murdering a young man in a street fight. Duruaku is alleged to have killed Hassan Haadi, 22, in Everton on Saturday, March 21st.  Hassan Haadi was found in Shaw Street, at its junction with Langsdale Street, at 8.30pm. He was unconscious and given first aid by passers by who called an ambulance to the scene. He was taken to hospital and treated for a head injury but died on April 5th. Elvis Duruaku of Barker Avenue North, who was studying at the University of Liverpool was arrested in Sandiacre on Tuesday, April 7th, on suspicion of murder. He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via a video link from Walton prison and spoke only to confirm his name. It is alleged Mr Haadi was knocked to the ground where he lay half in the road and that Duruaku then stamped on his head. The defendant was not asked to enter a plea to the charge and there was no application for bail. He will appear at a plea and trial preparation hearing on May 6th. 

TEENAGER ARRESTED AFTER STAPLEFORD ASSAULT

Police have arrested a 16-year old boy following an incident in Stapleford which resulted in a residential street being closed off overnight. Nottinghamshire Police were called just before 9.30pm on Friday 10th April to a report of an altercation involving four people in Brookhill Street, Stapleford. One man – aged 31 – sustained head injuries during the incident. He was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment for those injuries which are not believed to be life threatening or life altering. Officers attended the scene within minutes to arrest the teenager on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, after he had attempted to leave the area. He remains in police custody while detectives continue their investigation. Detective Sergeant Luke Todd from Nottinghamshire Police said:

“This is an assault which has left a man with some nasty head injuries following an incident where those involved are believed to be known to one another. The quick police response has resulted in one arrest which means our work can continue to help us to understand how the man came to sustain those injuries. The incident will have no doubt been seen and heard by a number of residents living in the street who will have been at home and following the government ‘stay at home’ guidance. I would encourage anyone who has not already spoken to our officers as part of our enquiries to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101 as soon as possible as any information they have could help with our enquiries.”

A section of Brookhill Street was closed following the incident as detectives worked to understand the circumstances surrounding the assault. The road reopened on Saturday morning. POLICE ARE APPEALING FOR WITNESSES AFTER PIZZA SHOP WINDOW SMASHED

Police received a report, just before 8pm on Monday 6th April 2020, that a man entered Manor Pizza on Church Street, Stapleford and shouted abuse at a member of staff after being asked to only come into the shop one at a time. The suspect then smashed a window in the shop before making off on foot. He is described as white, having stubble and was wearing a silver hoody. PC Simon Widdowson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Businesses are already struggling due to the impact of Coronavirus and now the owner of this takeaway is facing the added cost and inconvenience dealing with this mindless vandalism. The verbal abuse towards the member of staff was totally unacceptable. Racial incidents will not be tolerated in Nottinghamshire and a lot of work is continuing across the county so we confront issues like these head on. Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we are working hard to try to track down the individual involved. MAN ARRESTED IN SANDIACRE

A man has been arrested in Sandiacre on suspicion of murder after an assault in Merseyside. The incident occurred at 8.30pm on Saturday, March 21st. Police said a 22-year-old man from Everton was found unconscious after being assaulted. He was rushed to hospital and treated for a head injury but later died. A 24-year-old man was arrested on Monday evening, April 6th in Sandiacre on suspicion of murder. 

MAN ARRESTED FOLLOWING STAPLEFORD STABBING

A 28-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed article after a man was stabbed several months ago. It happened in Derby Road, Stapleford, at around 9pm on 12th December. The victim was treated in hospital for a stab wound to the stomach but his injuries were not life changing or altering. The man was arrested earlier today as part of the ongoing investigation and remains in police custody. Officers also seized a knife.

SANDIACRE COURT CARE HOME

Sandiacre Court Care Centre have introduced various activities over the past few weeks to ensure that its residents are comfortable and happy, whilst in a safe and sterile environment.

Unit Manager, Eva, led the Mother’s Day celebrations on Sunday, ordering special flowers for the residents at Harbour Residential! Eva is a mother herself and wanted to give the residents a memorable gift during this difficult time. Denisa, Holly, Daniel and Heather spent time delivering the beautiful flowers to each resident. They have also held Quizzes and 1-2-1 activities and residents continuing to paint, play board games and create jigsaw puzzles. Technology has been enabling residents to keep in contact with their loved ones. Rona Evans video called one of her closest friends recently to check-in, and family members have already started to get in touch with residents via Skype and WhatsApp call. At the end of the week, our residents wanted to share virtual messages to inform relatives and friends that they are happy, healthy and comfortable! 

CARE HOME COULD OFFER BEDS

Ladycross Care Home in Sandiacre which is under threat of closure could offer some of its beds to local hospitals. The home is one of seven care homes that could be closed after Derbyshire County Council deemed them unfit for purpose. The home has eight community support beds which were opened in January last year but due to staffing problems have not been used. The beds are funded by the NHS and county council who are now looking to see if these beds can be used to free up much-needed space in local hospitals. This has caused some concern from relatives, who are unable to visit the home due to coronavirus restrictions. The deadline for consultation on the closure of Ladycross is April 24th, however, public meetings have been cancelled due to the pandemic and all feedback needs to be done online, by phone or email.

STAPLEFORD COLLISION

Police investigating a collision in which a driver left the scene are appealing for the public’s help to trace the vehicle involved. At 9.20pm on Thursday, 26th March, the victim, a 48-year-old woman, was driving along Moorbridge Lane in Stapleford. The bridge, which is within the Derbyshire boundary, is currently undergoing repair work and only one lane is operating which is traffic light controlled. The victim was driving through on a green light when a red coloured car drove towards her at speed and the two vehicles collided. The red car did not stop and drove off in the direction of Sandiacre. The woman was left with minor injuries and was badly shaken.

Officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time, in particular drivers who may have caught the incident or the red car on dashcam. They also like to hear from anyone who may have seen a vehicle matching this description with substantial damage to its front.
